Trademark Registrations and Christmas: A Festive Overview

It is the season again of reindeer, Santa Clause, gifts, sparkling lights, eggnog, cookies, and the entire shebang! It is our favorite time of year especially because of spending time with family and friends. 

Did you know that certain aspects of Christmas can be trademarked? While the term "Christmas" itself cannot be monopolized due to its widespread usage, specific phrases, characters, and designs associated with the holiday can receive trademark protection.

While there haven't been reported legal disputes over the Christmas trademark itself, other holiday-related trademarks, such as Santa Claus, have seen their fair share of contention. Nevertheless, the spirit of Christmas prevails, with trademark holders largely spreading holiday cheer rather than acting as "Scrooges."
